The Bridge was filmed in Ocean City, an island connected to the New Jersey shore by three bridges. A tender visual narrative unfolds against a backdrop of dense morning fog that obscures the mainland, evoking a sense of the unknown, as boats, cars and bicyclists crisscross the scene at varying speeds. Movements are enhanced by diagonal, layered edits and complemented by long, continuous camerawork that describes the structure, reminiscent of the long, elegant brush strokes of Japanese calligraphy performance. The carefully framed compositions are supplemented by Leor Brenman’s digital aftereffects and matched with a soundscape composed by Robert Pehlke.

Synchronicity is defined as the quality or fact of being synchronous or simultaneous, as in the concurrence of acts, events, or developments in time, such as coincident movement or existence or, the concurrence in time of the picture image and the corresponding sound. This concept offered the inspiration for the creation of this short film. Synchronicity seamlessly blends multiple layers of images and sound.

New York City choreographer JoAnna Mendl Shaw and Christina Lanzl began collaborating in 2000 and are currently working on a new film. Lanzl has videographed particularly outdoor performances of the Equus Projects, serving as footage for mediaworks by the Lanzl+Brenman+Pehlke collaborative.

“I began collaborating with JoAnna in the year 2000 and we continue our interdisciplinary dialogue. In our work, we explore ways of communication that center on mutual respect and understanding, leading to kinder and gentler ways of interaction. Using a dialectic approach, the opposite spectrum of force, fear and submission is also uncovered. The resulting film is a vivid testimony of this process.” -- Christina Lanzl

The Equus Project features the work of New York City choreographer JoAnna Mendl Shaw who partners dancers with horses. The film is comprised of a poetic series of vignettes that range from quiet and pensive to quirky and humorous. Movement events unfold as dancers and horses improvise together during at liberty sessions, where the performers respond to each others’ actions and movement. The Equus Project film portrays the choreographic process and highlights the taunting beauty and the trust it takes on both the human and animal sides to delve into new, unknown territories of learning and interaction, magically merging the disciplines of modern dance and natural horsemanship.
