Dream Lookout

Environmental Arts, Art Walk on North Canal, Lawrence, MA

Site-specifi
c sculpture, 12’ x 3’x 3’

The chimneys of historic mill buildings dominate the skyline of Lawrence. Dream Lookout is a site-specific sculpture whose elements symbolize the city’s history as a mill town. American workers and immigrants came to Lawrence in search of jobs and a future. A quintessential dream image of the American family is the home with a small garden behind a white picket fence. Dream Lookout is comprised of an arbor-like structure with a white picket fence. A hand-woven cone mounted on top references both mill chimney and weaving spindle. Situated on the deck at the South side of the canal, the structure neighbors sets of gears from mechanical looms, with a view of the water and the narrow stretch of park along the opposite bank. The rusted gears bear witness to Lawrence’s industrial past, complement the sculpture, and establish a correlation between art and industry.
